No Time for Answers
by Vivian Imperiale
I never thought to ask
and you never thought to say because we thought we had a lifetime to learn about one another. I never saw picture albums of you from birth to manhood. I would have loved to see each changing version of that beautiful face. Is there a picture of you on a merry-go-round waving to your parents? Did your first-grade teacher give you an award for the biggest smile? Did you wear a little bowtie for your second-grade picture? Jumbles of questions never to be answered: What work did your mother and father do? Where did you live? Who were your favorite authors, singers, actors? What did you play on the piano? What did you watch on TV? I knew so much of the depth of you-- the intricacies of your facial expressions, the messages in your eyes. how to make you smile, how to calm your sadness, how to reassure you. I knew the whole—the marvelous whole-- but I didn’t know the little parts. We thought we would have time to talk about everything. But we were wrong. |
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Vivian Imperiale has lived in San Francisco since 1957 but still takes pride that she retains a bit of a New York accent. When she was a little girl, unbeknownst to her, her father wrote down the original poems he overheard her reciting to her brother as they lay in bed. Ever since, she returns to poetry to help identify and process emotions to deal with life events. Vivian had two seemingly disparate career tracks with administrative functions at a real estate office and in rehabilitation for those with psychiatric disabilities; she quickly discovered that the skill sets necessary for each definitely overlapped.
