Ode to a Night Owl
by Kathy Gilbert
Darkling I listen
You call quietly three times Hoot hoot hoot then wait You call again tranquil offshoots I imagine your round face Watching with yellow eyes From your perch on a tree limb South and west of my place of rest I count the space between your calls With yoga breath slowly inhaling Raising inspiration to the third eye Twenty seconds until your next call I release my meditation exhale And find placid rhythm of quiet Night scored by your sonics. Who are You calling to, warning or greeting Wise owl, attribute of Athena, patroness of craft Workers. Goddess of wisdom, courage and inspiration I breathe in your calm, your wartime strategy Defense of Athens, of democracy. |
