The Day She Left Us
by Joe Catalano
Was it the day her heart stopped beating, or her lungs released their final breath?
These surely signaled her passing. Was it the day the drug cocktail deadened her enough to endure a plastic pathway into her lungs; Or when the white sheets along her path were held aloft not for privacy; but to announce her surrender? Was the green cloth draping her then really a shroud? Maybe it was the day we last saw her; and not a blurred image on a screen where she used to be? No, it was not any of those days. It was the day when all that was left in her eyes was goodbye. |
