INSIDE OLLI
|
Richard Simmonds passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 after a long illness.
He grew up in Ohio, attended Ohio State University and UC San Diego, and taught English at both universities as well as at Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona. After owning and operating a theater and health food store in Kona, Hawaii for several years, he moved with his family to San Francisco and worked for many years as a graphic designer for the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. When he retired in 2010, he began taking OLLI at SF State classes and soon became an active member, serving as Chair of the OLLI Leadership Council and as a member of the Curriculum Committee where he worked to bolster the OLLI writing curriculum. Besides his official duties, he made significant contributions to the OLLI writing community as a participant in numerous writing classes, as one of the original members of the long-running Writers’ Circle, and as a founding member of Vistas & Byways Literary Review. He contributed poetry and photography to the magazine, served as Poetry Editor, worked on website graphics and designed the V&B logo, displayed on the right. Shortly before being forced to 'retire' from OLLI due to illness, Richard briefly became an OLLI instructor, teaching a course on Franz Kafka. Richard's total immersion in the OLLI program, combined with his easygoing manner and intellectual depth, made him a beloved figure. Some of us affectionately thought of him as "Mr. OLLI.” Please respect the request of Richard's wife, Katherine, for NO calls, cards or letters. Thank you. |

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Charlene Anderson received an MA in English Literature from Purdue University and an MA in Research Psychology from San Francisco State University and spent most of her working life at the University of California San Francisco in grant administration. As a child, she always knew she would write, told stories to her friends, and even invented a pen name for herself, Charles Andrè. So, while working on budgets and submitting grant proposals at UCSF, she continued to write and, in 2001 published a novel, Berkeley’s Best Buddhist Bookstore. When Vistas & Byways was launched in 2015, she was pleased to be asked to chair the Editorial Board. She has served in that capacity ever since.
